Rev. David E. Fox - Senior Pastor & Head of Staff
Pastor began his call at Gloria Dei in January of 2021. He is originally from the little town of Bethlehem, NC. Pastor graduated from Western Carolina University with a B.A., majoring in Philosophy and an approved course of study in Global Communications. From WCU he went on to Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary where he attained a Master of Divinity degree. Pastor is married to his beautiful bride, Liz. Liz is a deacon in the ELCA, under call with the United Methodist. Liz and Pastor have one son who is an avid reader and very competitive. Pastor did his internship in South Carolina and has served as pastor in North Dakota, North Carolina, and now Virginia. His hobbies are fishing, hiking, electric trains, and reading with his son. Pastor is a lifelong learner.
Ernie Atkins - President
Ernie is a native of Hampton and has attended Gloria Dei since 1992. Ernie and his wife, Tami, met in Pastor's class at Gloria Dei and have been members since 1995. They were married here in 1996.
Their two sons, Dean and Derek, were baptized here and enjoyed day care and summer programs at Gloria Dei. Ernie and Tami are blessed with and enjoy spending time with their grandchildren, R.W., Lola, and Bella.
Ernie's chosen career field for forty three years has been in public service, the last forty in law enforcement at the local, federal and state level. He is currently employed by the Commonwealth of Virginia with responsibilities involving criminal investigations related to licensed professions and occupations. Tami is a manager at Bayport Credit Union with responsibilities at the Willow Oaks and Hampton City branches.
Ernie serves as a communion assistant and was the Seekers Discipleship Group facilitator.
Jason Green - Vice President
Jason moved to Hampton in 1984 with his parents as they followed his dad’s Air Force career. Jason’s family became members of Gloria Dei in 1985. Jason married Jessica at Gloria Dei 15 years later, and their children are James (10), Joshua (8), and Jeremiah (2) were all baptized at Gloria Dei. James and Joshua attend Gloria Dei School and participate in the Youth Sunday School.
Jason and Jessica own a library furniture and school equipment company, which Jason had previously worked for since attending the University of Georgia and St. Leo’s University. They reside in Elizabeth Lake Estates with their two Labs, Pailyn and Harley; and cat, Jingles.
Jason has served Gloria Dei in many ways over the years including the Fields of Faith Campaign, World Hunger Appeal, Council Nominating Committee, and as an usher for Sunday services.
Kent Morgan - Council Member
Kent was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and grew up in King George, Virginia. He attended Christ Lutheran Church, where he was baptized and confirmed. It was at Christ Lutheran where he got his taste for ushering. He was a Chief Petty Officer, JROTC (Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps) in high school. Kent then moved to Newport News in July of 2002 for the apprenticeship program in Newport News Shipyard. In 2006, he started working for L3 Harris. His hobbies include video games, painting, and a new love of crochet.
In 2012, Kent found his new home at Gloria Dei and became a member. He was eager to get back to ushering and making it a home in which he could grow. Kent enjoys helping out with all of the fellowship events that Gloria Dei has to offer and would love to bring even more of his gifts to this wonderful church.
Eric Olsen - Council Member
Eric Olsen is a Virginia native who graduated from Phoebus High School. Growing up, he was active in Boy Scouts and attained the rank of Eagle Scout. He currently works within production control at Newport News Shipbuilding. Eric is blessed to have a wonderful young family, which you may recognize from their time working the tea and coffee bar over the past few years. Eric is married to Sarah, and they have a daughter, Emma. Outside of church and work, Eric has actively participated in various leadership positions within his company’s employee resource groups.
For fun, Eric enjoys cruising on his motorcycle, walking with the family, and enjoying movies in the comfort of their home….and the joys of occasional jet noise! He looks forward to the opportunity to sustain the good things our church has going on, navigate these trying circumstances, and grow our church family.
Todd Pfahl - Council Member
Todd was born at Kessler AFB, Biloxi Mississippi and considers Hampton his home since 1981. After serving in the US Army during Desert Storm he graduated from Christopher Newport University with a BA in Recreation and double minors in Business Administration and Golf Course Management.
Todd and Lisa have been married for 20+ years, children are Alexis and Natalie.
The family joined the Church in 2004 when both children were baptized. Both girls attended Gloria Dei Lutheran School from pre-school through 5th grade.
Todd works for Newport News Parks and Recreation and owns his own business, Pfahl’s Landscaping and Lawn Care. He enjoys his time as a volunteer with the Junior/Senior Youth Groups, assisting with the annual planting projects with the Confirmation classes, cooking for the fish fry, Shrove Tuesday Pancake Suppers and the pig pickins! Todd is currently serving on multiple 50th Anniversary committees.
Shannon Schubert - Council Member
Shannon Schubert has grown up in this church. She started as a Pre-K student and has seen the church expand and change along with her. Shannon served in the Order of the Cross and Crown, participated in the Youth Choir, Youth Handbell Choir, and she has served on the Music Search Committee. Shannon Schubert has earned her degree in Music Education from Old Dominion University, and she is excited to see where it takes her. Music has always been her first and greatest love, and it has shaped her for the better. She has enjoyed being in a church setting that celebrates music as much as Gloria Dei. You will find Shannon singing in the Adult Choir, accompanying on the flute during Lent and other special services, serving as Assisting Minister, Youth Leader, and volunteering for Vacation Bible School. Shannon hopes to work hard to continue to make our church community better and better.
Dan Singer - Council Member
Dan was one of six kids in a military family. After his father was stationed in the area, he decided to move back and raise his own family here. He has two children, Derek and Jessica. He is also the proud grandfather of Lane Mitchell. He currently works as a Division Manager at Plymkraft, Inc. in Newport News where he oversees the production and sale of ropes for military and commercial use.
He started attending Gloria Dei in 1999 and became a member in 2000. Jessica attended Gloria Dei School and was very active in the youth group and youth choirs. Dan has served in the past as Director of Parish Fellowship and is still heavily involved in the Fish Fry, Hanging of the Greens, and other Gloria Dei events. He also enjoys singing in both the Adult Choir and Worship Band. He participates in operating the soundboard, as a reader and serving as a Communion Assistant.
Garth Wallis - Council Member
Garth, an Air Force brat, moved to Hampton Roads in 1978 with his family. A life-long Lutheran, he has been a member of Gloria Dei since the early 1990’s. Prior to joining Gloria Dei, Garth was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council as the Finance Committee Chairman.
Garth has a degree in Business Administration (Finance) from Virginia Tech and is the Corporate Director of Internal Audit at Huntington Ingalls Industries (parent company of Newport News Shipbuilding).
Garth married Andrea (also a Hokie) and they have one son, Joshua. Josh attended Gloria Dei School from the 3-year old program through 5th grade, received First Communion, and was Confirmed at Gloria Dei. Josh is a freshman at Virginia Tech, following both of his parents footsteps. Garth is active in the Tuesday morning Men’s Bible Study, the Frosty Mug Book Club, and enjoys cooking for parish life events.
Ashley Zamora - Council Member
Ashley was born into membership at Gloria Dei in 1983. Her grandmother, Marie Adams, was a charter member of Gloria Dei. Ashley attended Gloria Dei School from 3-years-old through 2nd grade. She was baptized and had her First Communion here, and she was confirmed here in 1997. She was active in both Junior High and Senior High youth groups growing up and attended Virginia Synod Youth Retreats and ELCA Youth Gatherings.
After graduating high school, she attended college and graduated from ODU with a BS in Interdisciplinary Studies/teacher preparation. She took a position at The Mariners’ Museum, where she stayed until becoming a stay-at-home mom of three little ones. She has remained active in various ways in the church since graduating high school.
Ashley has been part of the young adult “youth” group, Junior High Youth Group Advisor, Director of Youth Handbells, Glorioso Spaghetti Dinners, and Pig Pickins. She has also served on committees such as the Nominating Committee and Pastoral Call Committee, and is serving on the current Pastoral Call Committee. Ashley is married to Michael, and they have three children-Micaela Ruhl, Jacob, and Isabella.
Mike Canny - Congregational Secretary
Mike is a long-time Hampton resident who began attending Gloria Dei in 1999. He retired as a sergeant from the Hampton Police Division in August 2017 following 34 years of service. During this time, Mike also served our community volunteering as a youth soccer coach and as the Vice President of the Greater Peninsula Swimming Association for ten years. He now referees youth soccer and drives for a local tour bus company.
Mike is a frequent attendee of the Men’s Bible Study and recently began singing in the Adult Choir. He and his wife, Susan, have one daughter, Megan, who graduated from fifth grade at Gloria Dei and presently teaches eighth grade Social Studies at Syms Middle School.
