Rev. Dr. Charles D. Bang - Senior Pastor & Headmaster
Pastor Bang was born in Fort Dix, New Jersey, on November 22, 1953. Pastor Bang attended military and public schools, graduating from Deer Park High School, on New York’s Long Island. He attended Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, and he earned his Bachelor's degree in 1975 majoring in philosophy, religion, and German.
While at Hartwick, he met Deborah B. Edds of Summit, New Jersey. Debby has her undergraduate degree in Art Education from the University of Oregon and her Master’s in Education from Buffalo State College. They were married in Berkeley, California, during Pastor Bang's first year in seminary.
Pastor and Mrs. Bang are the proud parents of two daughters. Kathryn (an undergraduate of Cornell University in Policy Anaylsis and Master’s graduate from Cornell Sloan School of Management in Health Management) currently works for Eli Lilly Pharmaceutical Company and Boehringer Ingleheim in global marketing and resides in Connecticut, and Sarah (a graduate of the University of Chicago in Geophysics and the University of Utah in Atmospheric Science), who is currently a senior doctoral candidate in Atmospheric Science and Meteorology at the University of Utah at Salt Lake City.
After graduating from Hartwick College, Dr. Bang attended graduate school at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and the Graduate Theological Union, both in Berkeley, California. While there, Pastor Bang served St. Mark's Lutheran Church in in Walnut Creek and Ebenezer Lutheran Church in San Francisco.
Pastor Bang was called to serve as Pastor at King of Kings Lutheran Church in Liverpool, New York, and then as Senior Pastor at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Buffalo, New York, where he served for 29 years.
Called to serve as Senior Pastor and Headmaster at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church and School in 2011, Pastor and Debby live in Hampton where Debby works at the Gloria Dei School as Art Teacher.
Rev. Dr. Phyllis B. Milton - Pastor
Pastor Phyl has graduate degrees in Business Education from Georgia State University and Christian Education from Bethel Seminary, San Diego, CA. Her doctorate is in Church Leadership Development and Organizational Systems from Bethel Seminary in Minneapolis – St. Paul, MN. She completed her Lutheran studies at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary in Columbia, SC.
Pastor Phyl has owned her own Christian education consulting ministry presenting workshops on multi-sensory teaching and learning; and served as adjunct faculty, teaching practical ministry courses for Diploma and Master’s level students at the John Leland Center for Theological Studies.
Pastor Phyl is a Pastor at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Hampton, VA. She was ordained in August of 2014. In addition to her church responsibilities, she is the Chaplain for Gloria Dei Lutheran School, providing leadership for chapel services and pastoral care for children, families and staff.
Pastor Phyl has been married for 42 years to Chaplain Nathaniel Milton (Captain, USN, Retired). They have two adult children and three granddaughters.
Ernie Atkins - President
Ernie is a native of Hampton and has attended Gloria Dei since 1992. Ernie and his wife, Tami, met in Pastor's class at Gloria Dei and have been members since 1995. They were married here in 1996.
Their two sons, Dean and Derek, were baptized here and enjoyed day care and summer programs at Gloria Dei. Ernie and Tami are blessed with and enjoy spending time with their grandchildren, R.W., Lola, and Bella.
Ernie's chosen career field for forty three years has been in public service, the last forty in law enforcement at the local, federal and state level. He is currently employed by the Commonwealth of Virginia with responsibilities involving criminal investigations related to licensed professions and occupations. Tami is a manager at Bayport Credit Union with responsibilities at the Willow Oaks and Hampton City branches.
Ernie serves as a communion assistant and was the Seekers Discipleship Group facilitator.
Jason Green - Vice President
Jason moved to Hampton in 1984 with his parents as they followed his dad’s Air Force career. Jason’s family became members of Gloria Dei in 1985. Jason married Jessica at Gloria Dei 15 years later, and their children are James (10), Joshua (8), and Jeremiah (2) were all baptized at Gloria Dei. James and Joshua attend Gloria Dei School and participate in the Youth Sunday School.
Jason and Jessica own a library furniture and school equipment company, which Jason had previously worked for since attending the University of Georgia and St. Leo’s University. They reside in Elizabeth Lake Estates with their two Labs, Pailyn and Harley; and cat, Jingles.
Jason has served Gloria Dei in many ways over the years including the Fields of Faith Campaign, World Hunger Appeal, Council Nominating Committee, and as an usher for Sunday services.
Aaron Sutherland - Council Member
Aaron was born and raised in Hampton. His family joined Gloria Dei in 1987. Aaron met Jenny and they were married at the church in 1997. In 2003 they welcomed their son Andrew to their family. Andrew was baptized, became a student at Gloria Dei School and has been very active in the church. They currently reside in Willow Oaks.
Aaron has been working for his father since he was a teen in the floor covering business. He has run one of the three locations for over 15 years. Jenny is an Office Representative for State Farm Agent Javier Fuentes.
Aaron has served the church since his days of Cross and Crown. He also has assisted in the Council Nominating Committee, H.E.L.P. bag lunch program, and currently as an usher. Aaron enjoys spending all of his free time with his family.
Alison Phillips - Council Member
Alison and her husband, Fred, became members of Gloria Dei in 2001 after moving to the region. The following year, they were married at Gloria Dei by Pastor Douglas Stowe.
Originally from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Alison holds a degree in Business Administration from Roanoke College and has numerous years of experience in the marketing and public relations field. She also currently serves as the social committee chair for their York County neighborhood.
Their children, Luke and Cameron, were baptized at Gloria Dei and are regularly involved in Sunday School and summer activities. Alison has led Vacation Bible School since 2013, coordinated the Christmas Pageant, and has been involved in several capital funding campaigns at Gloria Dei. Alison enjoys reading, exercising, gardening, cooking, and playing board games with her family.
Barry Zorumski - Council Member
Barry and his wife, Karen, are both lifelong residents of the Hampton Roads area and currently reside in Yorktown. They transferred to Gloria Dei in 2001 when their children; Alan, Jessica, and Matthew, were attending Gloria Dei Lutheran School.
Barry has a Master’s in Business Administration from the College of William and Mary and has spent the past 10 years teaching Mathematics to High School students in Newport News. Barry spends most of his free time working in various capacities with the Boy Scouts of America. Originally with Pack 184 at Gloria Dei and now with Troop 200 in Yorktown, he was recently awarded “Leader of the Year” for the Chesapeake Bay District.
Garth Wallis - Council Member
Garth, an Air Force brat, moved to Hampton Roads in 1978 with his family. A life-long Lutheran, he has been a member of Gloria Dei since the early 1990’s. Prior to joining Gloria Dei, Garth was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and served on the Church Council as the Finance Committee Chairman.
Garth has a degree in Business Administration (Finance) from Virginia Tech and is the Corporate Director of Internal Audit at Huntington Ingalls Industries (parent company of Newport News Shipbuilding).
Garth married Andrea (also a Hokie) and they have one son, Joshua. Josh attended Gloria Dei School from the 3-year old program through 5th grade, received First Communion, and was Confirmed at Gloria Dei. Josh is a freshman at Virginia Tech, following both of his parents footsteps. Garth is active in the Tuesday morning Men’s Bible Study, the Frosty Mug Book Club, and enjoys cooking for parish life events.
Jeane Fullen - Council Member
Jeane and her husband, Jim, were next-door neighbors growing up in Greenbrier County, West Virginia. They were married August 2017, graduated from Concord College, and moved to Hampton (Langley) when Jim returned from Vietnam.
Jeane taught in York County, stopped, had children, and began her teaching career again in 1978 at Gloria Dei Lutheran School. At that time their daughter, Amy, was five and son, Michael, was three. This same year, the children were baptized, and the family joined Gloria Dei Lutheran Church. Both children attended Gloria Dei School through the 6th grade, while Jeane continued to teach Kindergarten, completing her last ten years as the Science Resource teacher.
She has spent many years in the area of Parish Fellowship and coordinating receptions, as well as a “worker bee” for the pew duties of sharp pencils, envelopes, and Little Lutheran papers. Jim is a retired State Farm Agent, and together they enjoy walking, reading, baseball (Red Sox) and spending time with their five grandchildren, Mia (12) and Diego(9) Fuentes, and Trevor (9), Levi (7), and Skylar (2) Fullen.
Rita Foringer - Council Member
Rita and her husband, Tad, have been members of Gloria Dei since 1984 when they came to Hampton compliments of the Air Force. During then, she has been involved in the services, ministries and leadership of the church with previous time on church council including a term as Council President. She is currently involved in the teaching of Confirmation Classes, the Eucharistic Ministry, the Prayer Shawl ministry, DayBreaker’s, and anywhere needed.
Since retiring from American Greetings, Rita has been volunteering at The Virginia Living Museum where she works particularly with their raptor population. She and Tad love to travel especially to South American where they are able to see their beloved parrots flying freely. She also enjoys reading, cooking, knitting and of course, her pet parrots.
Todd Pfahl - Council Member
Todd was born at Kessler AFB, Biloxi Mississippi and considers Hampton his home since 1981. After serving in the US Army during Desert Storm he graduated from Christopher Newport University with a BA in Recreation and double minors in Business Administration and Golf Course Management.
Todd and Lisa have been married for 20+ years, children are Alexis and Natalie.
The family joined the Church in 2004 when both children were baptized. Both girls attended Gloria Dei Lutheran School from pre-school through 5th grade.
Todd works for Newport News Parks and Recreation and owns his own business, Pfahl’s Landscaping and Lawn Care. He enjoys his time as a volunteer with the Junior/Senior Youth Groups, assisting with the annual planting projects with the Confirmation classes, cooking for the fish fry, Shrove Tuesday Pancake Suppers and the pig pickins! Todd is currently serving on multiple 50th Anniversary committees.
